Asymmetry

An anniversary poem that hides its number in an arithmetic of winks, then flips its own title to sign off.
The poem is a riddle whose answer is the occasion. Seven is never stated as a fact; it is assembled. “All you do is wink twice” — that’s two. “As mine twitches / five times” — that’s five. Two and five make seven, the anniversary being marked, and the poem never says so. A reader who does the addition finds the number the title promised hidden inside the couplets.
Rumpelstiltskin is the load-bearing allusion and it is chosen precisely. That fairy tale turns entirely on a number nobody can guess — a name that must be discovered or a debt comes due. “A number Rumpelstiltskin never knew” places seven in that same category: a magic figure with power in it, and one the poem makes the reader guess rather than handing over. The fairy-tale frame also licenses the whole conceit, since Rumpelstiltskin is a story about spinning ordinary material into gold, which is what an anniversary poem attempts to do with an ordinary number.
The wink-and-twitch mechanism is the poem’s cleverest move. Her two winks are deliberate, controlled, magical — “the world changes / in my eyes.” His five twitches are involuntary, a nervous response, the body reacting without permission. She acts; he malfunctions. The asymmetry is the joke and also the tenderness: her small gesture undoes him five times over, and the ratio of two to five is the ratio of her composure to his helplessness.
“Hopelessly… / magical” is the resolution, and the ellipsis is doing real work. Hopelessly wants to attach to something negative — hopelessly lost, hopelessly confused — and the poem holds that expectation across the line break before landing on “magical” instead. The pause lets the reader feel the darker word coming and then supplies its opposite.
The flip to “Seven is Magic” for the sign-off closes the frame. The title asserted that magic is seven; the closing inverts it to seven is magic, and the two statements ring slightly differently — one makes seven the definition of magic, the other makes magic a property of seven. Between them sits the anniversary itself, which is both.
A clever occasional piece that hides its arithmetic well. Building the number seven out of two winks and five twitches, rather than stating it, is a genuine bit of construction, and the Rumpelstiltskin reference earns its place by tying the whole poem to a story about a magic number that must be guessed.
The wink-versus-twitch asymmetry is the best idea here — her deliberate gesture against his involuntary one, two against five, composure against collapse. It carries real feeling under the wordplay.
“Hopelessly… magical” uses its ellipsis intelligently, setting up a darker word and delivering its opposite.
Held at the lower end of the range by what it is rather than any failure: this is a card, written for one person on one date, and it depends on the reader granting the occasion its weight. The arithmetic is elegant but slight, and outside the anniversary context there isn’t much poem left once the trick is solved. Within that context it does exactly what it means to.
I think you have a magic twinkle
a number Rumpelstiltskin never knew—
all you do is wink twice
and the world changes
in my eyes
as mine twitches
five times
hopelessly…
magical.
Seven is Magic
Happy 7th Anniversary
