Faith is a Self-Portrait
“Faith is the substance of things hoped for,
Two currents — art and love — braided into one river, ending on the smallest possible physical gesture.
Ten lines, and the poem is built on a single geological word. A confluence is where two rivers meet and become one, keeping their separate sources but sharing one channel afterward. The poem names its subject in its title and then dramatizes it: art and love, two streams, “entwined” into one current that “twists and turns.” The Bard’s art and the Muse’s love do not merge into sameness; they braid, which is what confluent rivers do — they run together while remaining distinguishable in the water.
The poem opens mid-motion, without a subject. “glides with eternal grace” — the missing noun is the Muse, supplied only in the final line, so the whole poem is a sentence whose subject arrives last. That withholding is either a deliberate suspension or an artifact of the poem beginning in the middle of a thought; the effect is that “she” hangs unnamed over the first eight lines and only resolves at the close.
The Bard is characterized in the second stanza with real economy. “Layered words that search” and “a soul imbued with promise” describe a poet still looking rather than one who has arrived, and “spins tales of imagined truth” holds a productive tension — imagined and true at once, fiction that is nonetheless accurate. That phrase is the poem’s best thinking, a two-word oxymoron that describes exactly what the whole catalog claims to be doing.
Then the confluence itself, and then the poem’s quietest and best moment: “as my tentative hand brushes yours.” After the eternal grace, the river, the promise, the imagined truth — all of it large and abstract — the poem contracts to a single hesitant touch. Tentative is the word that earns it. A man who has just invoked eternity and confluence reaches out uncertainly, not sure the hand will be welcome. The scale collapses from cosmic to a fingertip, and the smallness is the feeling.
“My Muse” closes the poem by finally naming the subject that has been gliding since line one. The sentence completes, the river arrives at its mouth, and the two hands meet at the same instant the two rivers do.
A compact poem organized around one well-chosen word. Confluence does a great deal of work here — it supplies the title, the central image, and the poem’s argument that art and love run together without dissolving into each other. Choosing a term from geography rather than from the love-poem vocabulary gives the piece a spine that its softer phrases hang on.
“Spins tales of imagined truth” is the standout — a genuine paradox stated in three words, and a fair description of what the entire catalog attempts.
The ending is the achievement. Contracting from eternal grace and twisting rivers down to a tentative hand brushing another is the right instinct exactly, and “tentative” is the word that makes it real. After all the large abstractions, a man unsure whether his touch is wanted.
Two limits keep it below the stronger Muse poem sharing its date. The opening two lines lean on easy rhyme — “grace / replace” — and stock phrasing, so the poem takes a couplet to find its footing. And “a soul imbued with promise” is the one line built entirely from the common stock. The poem is at its best when concrete (the river, the hand) and at its weakest when it reaches for the abstract vocabulary of devotion.
Confluence
glides with eternal grace,
a vision no one can replace.
The Bard,
with layered words that search,
a soul imbued with promise,
spins tales of imagined truth.
The river of confluence twists and turns
entwined with art and love
as my tentative hand brushes yours,
my Muse.
