Death
Your pain is my pain— a single trembling
A theological proposition stated twice — once as aphorism, once as formal argument — followed by a sound and a two-line conclusion.
Eight lines, and the first two thirds are the same claim delivered at two different temperatures.
The opening line is compact enough to stand alone: “We come closest to the sacred loving another.” No punctuation between “sacred” and “loving,” which lets the participle attach two ways — the sacred that loves, and the act of loving that brings us close. That ambiguity is the most interesting thing in the poem’s first half, and it is probably accidental.
The second stanza restates the same idea in the language of a definition: “The closest a person can be to heavenly sacredness is / when a human has an intimate, / loving relationship with another person.” This is prose. Sacredness, heavenly, a human, another person — the vocabulary of a proposition being carefully hedged rather than a poem being written. Where the first line was compressed, this is expanded, and the expansion costs it.
Then the poem stops arguing. “Ahhh,” alone on its line, with a comma. It is not a word. It is the sound of a body registering something the preceding six lines were trying to state, and its arrival marks the exact point where the poem gives up on theology and reports experience instead. Whether it reads as satisfaction, relief, or resignation is left open by the comma, which promises continuation rather than closing the sound off.
The final couplet is where the poem earns its place: “Satisfaction is private / and godly.” Two adjectives, and the second one is the argument. Private is expected — intimacy happens away from witnesses. Godly is a claim the religious tradition this poem borrows from has often been reluctant to make about physical satisfaction. Placing them side by side, with no elaboration and no defence, is the boldest gesture available in eight lines.
The word “satisfaction” carries the risk. It is deliberately unpoetic, closer to a survey response than to the ecstatic vocabulary the subject usually attracts, and the plainness cuts both ways — it keeps the poem from overreaching, and it deflates the claim slightly at the moment the claim is made.
The first line and the last two are good. Everything between them is the same thought explained at greater length and lower pressure.
“Satisfaction is private / and godly” is a real ending — a claim worth making, made without apology, in five words. And the opening aphorism has genuine compression. The problem is that the second stanza sits between them doing nothing except restating the first in flatter language. “The closest a person can be to heavenly sacredness is when a human has an intimate, loving relationship with another person” is a sentence written to survive scrutiny rather than to be read, and its caution drains the conviction out of the claim it is defending.
“Ahhh” is the pivot and it nearly rescues the middle, because it admits that argument was the wrong tool. But it arrives after the damage.
This reads as a note rather than a finished poem — a strong first line, a working-out, and a landing. Cut the second stanza entirely and what remains is four lines that would score considerably higher. Rated at 6 on the understanding that it stands as written; the material for an 8 is present on the page.
We come closest to the sacred loving another.
The closest a person can be to heavenly sacredness is
when a human has an intimate,
loving relationship with another person.
Ahhh,
Satisfaction is private
and godly.
