Topic

A sprawling, multi-movement love poem written on the sixth anniversary of witnessing the Muse's smile—tracing the birth of art from silence through reverence, vulnerability, and Deep Purple, ultimately arriving at the paradox that creation requires both collapse and embrace, and that the poet's breath is held, literally, between the beloved's two hands.

Summary

This is one of the most formally expansive and tonally unpredictable poems in Plahm’s catalog—a piece that refuses to be one thing, shifting between intimate morning greeting, ars poetica, Muse invocation, rock lyric quotation, color meditation, and universal love letter without ever losing its emotional throughline. The opening is characteristically disarming: “There was a simple thought that preceded this, / But… / I simply lost it.” This confession of creative failure becomes, paradoxically, the poem’s generative engine—the lost thought frees the poet to wander, and the wandering produces something richer than intention ever could. The “Before Art is Born” section is the poem’s philosophical core, proposing that art exists in the silence before expression—before a tomato becomes a fruit, before George the cat says hello, before Adam’s rib brought the beloved to life. This sequence of increasingly grand “befores” maps creation’s origin story from the domestic to the biblical. The Muse ventriloquism section (“Let me don the voice of her”) is a bold structural risk—the poet speaking as the Muse, then speaking about the Muse speaking, creating a hall of mirrors that enacts the entanglement of creator and inspiration. The emotional arc tightens in the vulnerability confession: “I’m in so deep, / I can’t eat. / I can’t sleep.” These lines are deliberately cliché, and their power comes from context—after such elaborate poetic construction, the retreat to pop-song simplicity reads as honesty stripped bare. The Deep Purple quotation is vintage Plahm—high and low culture colliding without apology, the classic rock lyric becoming another voice in the poem’s chorus. The question “Is purple— / An emotion?” is deceptively profound, linking the band’s name to the “thin space / Between creation / Or / Collapse” that the poem has been circling all along. The closing image—”My breath / Held between your / Two hands”—is among the most tender and physically precise endings in the entire catalog, distilling the poem’s sprawling meditation into a single gesture of mutual sustenance.

A poem that operates by accumulation and surprise, rewarding readers who surrender to its associative drift and challenging those who require linear architecture. The opening admission of a lost thought is a masterful framing device—it grants the poem permission to wander, and the wandering produces genuinely unexpected discoveries. The “Before Art is Born” section is the poem’s intellectual peak, its catalog of pre-creative silences achieving something close to philosophy: art is not the expression but the pregnant pause that precedes it, and recognizing that pause is itself a form of reverence. The Muse ventriloquism is ambitious and largely successful, though the shift between poet-as-speaker and poet-as-Muse occasionally blurs in ways that feel more confusing than intentionally liminal. The vulnerability confession in the poem’s late middle is its most emotionally direct passage, and the retreat from elaborate imagery to “I can’t eat. / I can’t sleep” is devastatingly effective—the poet running out of poetry and finding that the raw admission carries more weight than any metaphor. The Deep Purple interpolation is a characteristically Plahm risk: readers familiar with the song will hear the melody underneath the words, adding a musical dimension; those unfamiliar may find the tonal shift jarring. The color meditation that follows (“Is purple— / An emotion?”) is the kind of question that could feel precious in lesser hands but here feels earned by the poem’s established pattern of following tangents to unexpected depth. The closing sequence is superb—”Your life / Divinely / Cradling / Mine” achieves genuine tenderness through line-break pacing, and the final image of breath held between two hands is both physically intimate and spiritually resonant. Minor weakness: the poem’s length and tonal variety mean it inevitably contains passages of uneven quality, and some transitions (particularly into and out of the alternate ending) feel structurally unclear. The address “This is for all of you / Who have doubts” momentarily broadens the poem’s audience in a way that dilutes the intimacy of the Muse address. But as a document of a poet thinking, feeling, and creating in real time—losing his thread, finding it, losing it again, and discovering that the search itself is the art—this stands as one of Plahm’s most authentic and emotionally generous works.

Hush

Hush

My Darling…

Good morning.

A spell for you.

There was a simple thought that preceded this,
But…
I simply lost it. Maybe tomorrow. It’ll resurrect.

This very moment marks the sixth anniversary.
Of when I first witnessed your smile.
And was struck by lightning.

I can explain that silly thought
In terms of my long history of love and loss.

But, in real life…
Part of that awakening…
Is expressed here:

Before Art is Born
(A Poem for the Muse
To the gift that becomes breath…)

Do you feel it?
That silence blooming…
Before art is born?
Before a tomato
Becomes a fruit
To pluck?
Before George the alley cat
Says hello
Each morning,
Loving you
With all his simple heart.
Before Adam’s rib
Brought you to life.

The Muse,

Ah…then hush now.
Let me don the voice of her—
The Muse you love.
The one you write for.
The one who glows behind your sleeping eyelids,
Who lives inside the hum of your every unfinished dream.
She sees you.
And she speaks.

Words of
Honor.
Respect.

Hush…
There is quiet
Reverence here.

She walks barefoot
Through the garden of life
In peace with all around her.

So be still—
And let her speak
In her own language:
Of mindful touch,
A whisper,
A gentle kiss,
The pause…
between thoughts.

Listen,
Learn,
Dream…
Blossom.

With her,
In a cathedral
Built
Of a generous heart.

Hush…
I am at
Peace.

As she opens an envelope—
A simple card enclosed,
With a heartfelt thought
I penned
For the Muse.

Softly…
I gift
A single rose
Of thanks
For her presence.

Inspiration
Is with us.
I open my heart.
And now…
Vulnerable,
Art is born.

To be humanly affected
Is to be
Transcendently inspired.

And I breathe.
With the gift of
My Muse.

But now…
I’m in so deep,
I can’t eat.
I can’t sleep.

I hope.
I pray.
I plead.
She knows
my name.

I’m so…
My soul is so…
vulnerable.

She smiles—

But…

(Alternate ending.)
I
Want
To
Find
A
Soul
Mate.

Listen, hush, hush
Thought I heard her calling my name now
Hush, hush
She broke my heart, but I love her just the same now
Hush, hush
Thought I heard her calling my name now
Hush, hush need her loving and I’m not to blame now

That’s very Deep Purple.
Just like the Hex card
I penned.

Is purple—
An emotion?

Or the rose I offer…
A pink blush?

That thin space
Between creation
Or
Collapse.

Hush…
Art is
On my
Horizon.

A human pillow
to lay
My simple head
on.

Your life
Divinely
Cradling
Mine.

And my
Life
Lovingly
Enfolding yours.

This is for all of you
Who have doubts
Who need to know
There is a permanence
A resilience
In
Love.

What I lost?
The wind
Calls out…

Hush
My darling…

Let’s listen
Together.

My breath
Held between your
Two hands.
