Topic

A meditation on the sufficiency of the heart—whether one heart holds enough love to endure all seasons and all hardships, building toward the discovery that two hearts combined create abundance, and that faith is the bridge from self to eternity to love.

Summary

This poem traces a spiritual arc from doubt to transcendence, beginning with the deceptively simple question “Is your heart enough?” and arriving, through a series of emotional and philosophical escalations, at a symbolic equation: ●→∞→♥ (from self, to eternity, to love). The opening stanzas ground the question in the body—sweat on a summer day, bone-deep ache in winter—insisting that the heart is first a physical organ pumping stamina before it becomes a metaphor for emotional capacity. The pivot comes at “Sufficiency?”—a single-word stanza that functions as a hinge, shifting the poem from physical endurance to emotional abundance. The question “Am I asking too much?” is the poem’s most vulnerable moment, a crack in the speaker’s confidence that makes the subsequent leap of faith feel earned rather than assumed. Structurally, the poem is ambitious: it moves from free verse questioning through a formal rhyming couplet section (“Through summer’s sweat, through winter’s pain, / Its pulse, a spark that storms sustain”) before arriving at the prose-like clarity of the “Epiphany” closing. The use of mathematical and typographic symbols (●→∞→♥) is a signature Plahm gesture—translating emotional logic into visual shorthand, as if love’s trajectory can be diagrammed. The title’s modesty is the poem’s quiet thesis: transcendence doesn’t require grand gestures, just “a small share” of faith offered between two willing hearts.

An emotionally layered poem that rewards patient reading, moving through several distinct registers—physical, emotional, metaphysical—before arriving at its symbolic conclusion. The opening question-and-answer structure is effective, with each repetition of “Is your heart enough?” gaining weight as the contexts shift from summer heat to winter pain to existential brokenness. The pivot to “Sufficiency? / Your heart— / Abundance?” is elegant, the single-word lines creating breathing room that mirrors the poem’s movement from scarcity to surplus. The vulnerability of “Am I asking too much?” is well-placed, arriving just before the poem’s most confident assertion about sacred combination, so that confidence feels tested rather than assumed. The formal rhyming section (“To the Infinite”) represents a bold structural gamble—shifting mid-poem from free verse to metered couplets. The rhymes occasionally feel forced (“so” / “flow,” “you” / “true”), but the shift in form enacts the poem’s argument: the leap from self to infinity requires a different kind of language. The ●→∞→♥ symbol is visually striking and conceptually compact, functioning as both equation and emoji—mathematics meets devotion. The three-line “Epiphany” closing is the poem’s strongest moment of compression, distilling the entire journey into a haiku-like declaration. Minor weakness: the poem’s multi-section structure risks feeling episodic rather than unified, and the transition between free verse and formal verse is somewhat abrupt. But the emotional trajectory is genuine, and the title’s quiet understatement—asking only for “a small share”—is a lovely counterpoint to the poem’s cosmic ambitions.

Just a Small Share

Is your heart enough?
On a hot, humid summer day—
The sweat glistening,
Running down your toes

That strongly beating heart
Gifts your stamina and strength
That all can witness

Is your heart enough?
On a cold, bitter winter day,
When the ache
Is bone-deep?
On a broken, wasted day,
When nothing works,
And effort feels lost?

Sufficiency?
Your heart—
Abundance?
Is it large enough?
Is there a profusion
To share
With me?

Your endurance
With mine—
What grace.

Two hearts,
With more than enough—
A sacred combination
Of abundance.

Am I asking too much?

Does it—
Require
A leap
Of faith?

Can I
Take You
To
The Stars?

And Both
Of Our
Hearts…
Find
Heaven
Together?

●→∞

To the Infinite

Is my heart enough?
Through summer’s sweat, through winter’s pain,
Its pulse, a spark that storms sustain.
With yours, a grace that lights the way,
Two hearts, as one, in endless day.

Too much to ask? No—love’s not so.
The leap of faith makes starlight flow.
To the stars, I’ll go, with you,
Our hearts, entwined, find heaven true.
●→∞
From one, we soar, to boundless skies,
Where love’s infinity never dies.

Epiphany

Just a small share.
Faith is the path.
To everlasting love.

●→∞→♥
From self, to eternity, to love.
