Perfume on a Stranger’s Coat
Can I? I might need ears of wax—
A whispered meditation on stillness, faith, and the quiet certainty that meaning is found not through striving but through lingering—in solitude, in God's presence, and in the steady recognition of beauty in another.
This is among Plahm’s most distilled poems—barely more than a breath, yet carrying the weight of a full philosophy. The opening conditional (“If I linger in the quiet”) poses two questions: will stillness keep me alive, and will my life hold meaning? The answer arrives not through argument but through decision: “I think / I’ll linger, / And meditate / In the solitude / Of God.” The shift from questioning to choosing is the poem’s quiet drama. What follows is pure declaration—”I am alive— / And full of meaning”—as if the act of lingering itself has answered the question. The pivot to “Sleep well, beautiful Lady” transforms the poem from private meditation into intimate address, and the closing three lines (“Every time, / I see you”) reveal that the speaker’s source of meaning is not abstract but embodied in a specific person. The poem’s power lies in its restraint: no ornamentation, no extended metaphor, no narrative. It reads like a prayer whispered at the edge of sleep—a lullaby for both the beloved and the self. The title’s word “Subtle” is the poem’s truest self-description.
A miniature that achieves disproportionate emotional impact through radical compression. Every word earns its place—there is nothing extraneous, nothing decorative, nothing that could be cut without loss. The poem’s movement from existential question to spiritual decision to romantic tenderness covers enormous ground in just sixteen lines, and the tonal shift from philosophical inquiry to bedside whisper feels natural rather than forced. The repetition of “linger” grounds the poem in its central verb—this is a piece about the courage to stay still. The invocation of God’s solitude as the space where meaning resides gives the poem spiritual weight without becoming preachy. The closing image—beauty seen “Every time, / I see you”—achieves through simplicity what longer poems sometimes fail to reach through elaboration. Where the poem risks weakness is in its very brevity; some readers may want more development of the connection between spiritual solitude and romantic devotion. The transition from meditation to lullaby, while lovely, happens so quickly that the relationship between the two states remains suggestive rather than fully explored. But perhaps that is the point: subtlety, as the title promises, is the mode. A poem that trusts silence as much as speech.
If I linger in the quiet,
Feel the peace,
And appreciate uncertainty –
Will I be alive?
And my life be full of meaning?
I think
I’ll linger,
And meditate
In the solitude
Of God.
And know
I am alive –
And full of meaning.
Sleep well, beautiful Lady.
And wake to the beauty I see.
Every time,
I see you.
