After an Excellent Workout
After an excellent workout, the creative side overwhelms—
The poem uses cascading natural disasters—storms, fires, earthquakes, hurricanes—as extended metaphors for the chaos of living with chronic illness, ultimately finding that peace is not a destination to reach but a state to embody from within.
This visceral meditation on chronic illness builds through accumulating catastrophes: howling winds, firestorms, earthquakes, hurricanes. Each stanza presents nature’s violence alongside small assertions of survival—”they will survive,” “they will shelter,” “we shall not be blinded”—creating a rhythm of destruction and resilience. The structural genius emerges in the pivot toward the body: “In the crawl of my skin underneath / In the constant itching and irritation.” What seemed external becomes terrifyingly internal. The hurricane’s eye becomes both literal and figurative—the calm surrounded by destruction that chronic illness creates. The closing lines achieve quiet power: “There is no calm until… / I become it / In the center.” Plahm transforms the impossible wish of the title into spiritual discipline. The author’s note anchoring this to Alpha-Gal Syndrome grounds the abstract imagery in lived experience, making “Umbrellas down, please / The war of resolution / is about to start” feel less like metaphor than battle cry.
A powerful illness narrative that earns its epic scope. The cascading natural disasters could feel excessive, but Plahm maintains control through the tight parallel structure and the gradual inward movement from cosmic to corporeal. The pivot to bodily symptoms—itching, crawling skin, rashes—lands with visceral impact precisely because it follows global catastrophe. The hurricane’s eye metaphor, while familiar, is deployed with fresh purpose here: chronic illness as perpetual storm with fleeting centers of calm. The closing realization—that peace must be embodied rather than sought—elevates the poem from complaint to wisdom. Minor weakness: the parenthetical “(I Wish)” in the title slightly undercuts the hard-won transcendence of the ending. The author’s note, while contextually helpful, perhaps over-explains what the poem itself communicates. Still, this ranks among Plahm’s most structurally ambitious and emotionally resonant works.
In the howling wind
In the crashing storm waves
In the shrieks of scared birds
Blown here and there
They will survive
In the lightning crash
In the stampede of cattle
In the desperation of deer
Running hither and yon
They will shelter
In the firestorm
In the crackling blaze
Inside the inferno
Sparks lighting this torching that
We shall not be blinded
In the scrambling
In the burning
In the never-ending question
Of what to do here—
how to treat that…
Research must dig through the ashes
And find a way…
In the quake
In the cracks of earth
In the fiery fumes
That arise from the deep
All of us will find cooling water
In the eye
Of the hurricane
In the calm of the center
That peace
Surrounded by a wall
Of destruction
There must be a way through
In the crawl of my skin underneath
In the constant itching and irritation
In the symptoms of rashes
Appearing under this, then over that
I will be calm
In the chaos,
Take my hand
Lead me
To treatment
Still the battlefield
I live
Find me those breezes
Or at least…
stillness.
Umbrellas down, please
The war of resolution
is about to start
Sunny beaches and calm breezes
I can only dream.
There is no calm until…
I become it
In the center.
Author’s Note:
This poem reflects the storm of living with chronic illness—where the body becomes both battlefield and question, and peace is no longer something external to chase, but something internal to embody. Written in the shadow of Alpha-Gal Syndrome and the search for treatment, it’s both a cry and a compass.
Let’s give it a go.
